Use Experts In Project Construction – NSE
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in Abuja has advised
Nigerians to employ the services of professionals when embarking on building
construction and other projects.
The Chairman of the Abuja Chapter of the NSE, Mr Emeka
Ozioko, made the call during a visit to construction sites and industrial
establishments in the FCT.
Ozioko who led other members of the society on the visit,
stated that it was the tradition of the society to visit their colleagues who
were not on the field.
According to him, the visit was part of activities to mark
this year’s Engineers’ Week.
“One of our activities is to visit construction sites or
industries. This year, we decided to visit industries and we went to Alpha-plus
Furniture and Polystyrene Industries Ltd.
“We went through all the engineering aspects of their work
and saw that they were doing an excellent job,” he said.
Ozioko noted that although the society did not have the
authority to sanction industries performing below standards, it could report
erring companies to appropriate agencies for necessary actions.
“We don’t have the legislative power to punish companies or
industries that are not performing up to standards.
“But we have the Council for the Regulation of Engineering
in Nigeria, a body that regulates engineering practice.
He urged Nigerians to patronise only professionals, adding
that there were many quacks in the profession.
Ozioko said that the society would be willing to provide
professionals for anybody who needed their services to execute projects.
“We need to differentiate professionals from quacks. If you
have anything to do with an engineer, make sure you consult us and we shall
provide you with registered professionals that will execute your project,” he
said.
Mr Ikechukwu Uzoma, the Managing Director of Alpha-plus
Furniture, commended the initiative of the society and urged it to transform
into a pressure group to protect industries.
Uzoma decried the lack of infrastructure in the country,
noting that it had made production difficult for industrialists and called on
the government to look inward to encourage investors.
“Here, we have over 200 workers. We have trained about a
hundred at home and abroad yet we don’t have power, no good roads.
“We don’t have access to funds, we don’t even have
government patronage.
“Government should not only look for direct foreign
investment, they should look inwards too and encourage local investors,” he
said.
Tanko Dauda, a Factory Engineer in one of the industries
visited, said that his company’s major challenge was a lack of raw materials in
the country for the company’s line of business.
“We chose Abuja as our location because we thought we could
get raw materials from Ajaokuta Steel Company and the refinery in Kaduna.
“But, it is unfortunate that we have to import raw materials
from Asia. These companies have not been able to provide us the raw materials
we need,” Dauda said.
