The National Assembly has been urged to speed up the passage of the Postal Sector Bill into law in order to inject new blood into the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST).

Some people who spoke with The Tide in Port Harcourt Wednesday, including Mr. Stanley Amadi Aja said the passage of the Bill into law will enhance performance of the NIPOST.

Aja, noted that the country was interested in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development, and should not fail to encourage moves to support ICT compliance in NIPOST.

He said both the Senate and House of Representatives, should take the proposed Postal Sector Bill seriously and ensure its survival.

The former Omerelu Youth Association’s (OYA) president, regretted that lawmakers in the country were only interested in some lucrative sectors, saying that NIPOST can address the issue of joblessness in the country if it is fully ICT-driven.

He called on the Senate Committee Chairman on Communication, Senator Gilbert Nnaji to do everything possible within the ambit of the law to ensure that every sector of the economy had ICT department.

Aja pointed out that most developed countries of the world now depend on information technology, adding that the analogue system in the country was responsible for the regular fraudulent acts in the country.

In his contribution, Comrade Chinda Evans Ogbuji, said that the passage of the postal sector bill will enable NIPOST keep pace with the ongoing reform in the Nigerian Civil Service.

Ogbuji who is the Rivers State chapter chairman of Peoples Democratic Party Core Supporters Network (PCSN) said the lack of ICT compliance was one of the problems plaguing NIPOST.

He noted with dismay, how the relevant authorities have undermined the activities of the NIPOST, adding that it is high time the Gilbert Nnaji-led Senate Committee not only passed the Postal Sector Bill into law, but introduced a total overhaul of the country’s main postal service.
