The Managing Director, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Mutiu Sunmonu has charged oil workers to be determined to fight against illegal bunkering in Nigeria.

Sunmonu gave the charge last week when he appeared before the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Petroleum Resources.

He said the oil sector revolved on oil workers and so they should be determined to fight against the menace of illegal bunkering.

The SPDC boss disclosed that the country loses 150,000 barrels of oil daily and stressed the need for oil workers to feel concerned and confront the issue with seriousness.

Sunmonu said the country had lost more than 100,000 barrels of oil daily between 2003 and 2004.

Said he: “You will see a single refinery spreading all over, you will see barges, you will see canoes all over, the Niger Delta.

I think the situation we have found ourselves, our estimate today is that Nigeria is losing about 150,000 barrels of oil daily”.
