RVHA Empathises With Disaster Victims
The Rivers State House of Assembly, has commiserated with victims of the multiple fire incidents in the state, particularly the management and staff of Rivers State Newspaper Corporation, and Okogbe community.
It would be recalled that in the past few weeks, there had been a series of fatal fire incidents in Rivers State which had claimed several lives and property worth millions of Naira.
The Chairman of House Committee on Information, Mr Onari Brown, who briefed journalists on the incident yesterday in Port Harcourt said the House was saddened by the development.
He recalled that the incident that occurred at Igwuruta near Port Harcourt left seven dead, many injured while property worth millions of Naira were destroyed.
The Chairman said that the fire in Okogbe Community, Ahoada West Local Government Area claimed more than 100 lives and many people were also injured while property worth millions of naira were destroyed.
Brown said that the latest incidents that took place also in Port Harcourt, July 20 involved some media houses including the Rivers State News Paper Corporation and Sylverbird 93. 7 Rhythm FM Radio Station.
The lawmaker added that the inferno also touched the Silverbird Television Station with serious damage to its engineering department.
The Chairman also recalled that an oil vessel at Abuloma jetty, near Port Harcourt went up in flames, leaving the occupants seriously injured and property worth millions of Naira damaged.
“At this juncture, may I on behalf of the Rivers State House of Assembly, commiserate with families that lost their loved ones and property in the inferno,’’ he said.
He, however, commended Governor Chibuike Amaechi, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and others for their roles in the management of the inferno.
