Reproductive Health: Commission Urges Holistic Intervention

The National Population Commission (NPC) has emphasised the need for holistic interventionary any measures to the issue of reproductive health in Nigeria.

Chairman of the commission, Eze Festus Odimegwu who made the call at a Press Conference last Wednesday in commemoration of the 2012 World Population Day celebration said the issue had become more challenging.

In his speech presented in Port Harcourt by the Federal Commission, National Population Commission in Rivers State, Rev Dr. Wokoma D.C. Wokoma, the NPC chairman harped on the need for more access to voluntary planning services and also urged stakeholders to step up their advocacy to policy makers for increased budgetary allocation to the health sector.

He noted that several women were confronted with unwanted pregnancies, a situation that could have been easily prevented if they had access to contraceptives.

He explained that the theme of this year’s World Population Day Celebration, “Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services” focused on evaluating the gains of the reproductive  health campaign and celebrating those who in their line of duty facilitate progress by widening access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.

He commended the media for their commitment in publishing health matters and urged media practitional not to relent.

Highlight of the event was a debate participated by some schools in the state on the topic, “School Sex Education  Be Introduced In Our Secondary Schools.”

Zion International Secondary School, Port Harcourt emerged winner while Community Secondary School Harbour Road also in Port Harcourt came second.
