The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has expressed deep grief at the death, on Wednesday morning, of former National Team captain, Samuel Ojebode.

Ojebode died in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, from lung cancer.

Speaking in Abuja, NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari said the Nigeria Football family was greatly saddened by Ojebode’s death and prayed that Almighty God will grant the good family he has left behind the fortitude to bear the big loss.

“We received with great sadness news of the death of the former National Team Captain, Samuel Ojebode. It is big loss, but we are comforted by the fact that he lived a good life and served his country well,” Maigari stated.

Ojebode was deputy skipper of the Green Eaglets at the 1976 African Cup of Nations finals in Ethiopia but wore the Captain’s armband in Nigeria’s first three matches in the forced absence of Christian Chukwu. He was also a member of the IICC Shooting Stars FC that won Nigeria’s first continental honour, the African Cup Winners Cup, later the same year.
