Jubilation As Community Gets Link To National Grid
It was wild jubilation at Akinima, headquarters of Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, recently as hundreds of indigenes of Mbiama community thronged the council to register their solidarity and gratitude to the chairman of the LGA, Hon Awori Miller for connecting the community to national grid.
Paramount Ruler of the Community, Eze Sumol Dikio, who led the delegation, told The Tide in an interview that the people were overwhelmed by the chairman’s gesture as the community was having electricity for the first time since its inception.
He said politicians had always harped on their readiness to provide electricity for the community as a campaign slogan, but said that it was only the administration of Hon Miller that had kept faith with his words.
On his part, the CDC Chairman of the community, Engineer Moore Sokari said the connection of Mbiama community to national grid was a dream come true, and promised that the infrastructure would be fully utilised to promote the economic and social well being of the people.
The CDC Chairman pointed out that the youths in particular would take advantage of the development to embark on creative activities, as “electricity was the essential infrastructure needed to promote enterprises development.”
Also speaking, the women leader of Mbiama, Mrs Alice Abel said the women were happy as electricity would bring development to the people as well as enhance social life.
The youth leader, Inime Karibo thanked the council chairman for keeping to his words.
He said most youths in the community had acquired skills in welding, hair dressing, among other trades, and will now be gainfully engaged with the provisioned electricity.
In his remarks, the council chairman, Hon Awori Miller said the gesture was not only to fulfil his electioneering promise to the people, but to complement the effort of the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi in the transformation of the rural areas.
He said contract had been awarded for the construction of an ultra-modern market in Mbiama which he said would commence in December.
