Jonathan, Obasanjo Mourn Atta-Mills
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday, expressed his condolences to the people of Ghana over the death of their President, John Atta-Mills.
Jonathan said that the death of Atta-Mills at this time in the democratic evolution of Ghana was very sad and shocking, and praised the late president for developing his country.
He charged the people of Ghana to take solace in the fact that Atta-Mills had made sacrifices that consolidated the nation’s democratic process.
Also reacting, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that the death of President Atta-Mills is came to him as a rude shock, describing him as a stabilising influence in his country, Ghana, and indeed, the West African sub-region.
He tasked the people of Ghana to mourn the president with gratitude to God for providing them such a leader at a time they deeply needed intercessor in their democratic sojourn.
The Tide recalls that Ghana’s President John Evans Atta-Mills, aged 68, died yesterday while receiving medical treatment at a military hospital.
In a statement announcing the death of the president, the Ghanaian Army said, “it is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden death of the President of the Republic of Ghana.”
The statement explained that, “the death occurred at the 37 Military Hospital in the afternoon while receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours earlier.”
Mr Atta-Mills became president in January, 2009.
