First Female CJ For Inauguration Monday

History will be made Monday as the Federal Republic of Nigeria celebrates the inauguration of the first-ever female Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The Special Adviser to the president on National Assembly Affairs, Senator Joy Emodi, said that Justice Alooma Mariam Murkhatar the CJ-designate would be inaugurated as CJN on Monday.

Having demonstrated great brilliance in her knowledge of national and judicial matters, the Senate on Wednesday unanimously confirmed the nomination of Justice Murkhtar as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

Reacting to the approval of her nomination by the Senate, Justice Murkhatar assured the senate of her resolve and determination to rid the country of corrupt judges, this she intends to achieve by first adopting an internal   an internal cleansing approach.

“Her words,” As chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC), I will encourage internal cleansing based on petition. But that is not to say that I will condone frivolous petitions. Each petition will be looked at on its merits.”

She promised to improve and restore the confidence of Nigerians in the judiciary.

Earlier, the Kano State chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has said that FIDA was proud of  Justice Murkhtar’s meritorious achievements, pointing out that as a practitioner, who had risen through the ranks, Justice Murkhtar was fully aware of the problems and the need for reform in the judiciary.

She recalled that Alooma was the first woman lawyer, Chief Magistrate, Chief Registrar, High Court, Appeal Court Judge from the northern part of the country.
