The people of Ezinifite in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra, have appealed to the Federal Government to intervene on the erosion menace in the area.

The President-General of the community, Mr Ikechukwu Ifediniru, made the appeal last Thursday when the Transition Committee Chairman, Nnewi South, Mr Egwuoyibo Okoye, visited the community.

Ifediniru said that two villages in the community Akala and Akaihedi had been living in fear following the threats posed by the erosion.

He said that apart from the erosion challenges, the community needed a befitting academic environment for their children, adding that most of the school buildings were in a state of disrepair.

“We thank Governor Peter Obi for remembering the people at the grassroots; we urge him to persuade the Federal Government to come to our aid and solve our age-long erosion problem.

“We want the State Government to upgrade schools in the community by rehabilitating some of the dilapidated school buildings,’’ he said.

Responding, Okoye said that his visit to the community was to familiarise himself with the people of Ezinifite and to know their challenges.

Okoye noted that the erosion problem had gone beyond the State Government.

“I would carry your complaints to the State Government through the Ministry of Environment that would liaise with federal government to fashion out possible ways to control the erosion,’’ he said.

Okoye, while approving the reconstruction of Akala Community Primary School, reiterated the readiness of the present administration to work for welfare of the rural dwellers.

He said that government would soon embark on the construction of the road linking the people with the Akwaihedi community through the already constructed bridge.
