The Enugu State Government has sent an executive draft bill for a law prohibiting the use of motorcycles within Enugu Capital Territory to the State House of Assembly for consideration.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke disclosed this while briefing journalists at the end of the State Executive Council Meeting in Enugu chaired by the State Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime.

According to commissioner Ugwoke, the bill when passed and signed into law will make it an offence for anybody to use motorcycle within Enugu North, Enugu South and Enugu East local government areas of the state.

Mr. Ugwoke explained that the law prohibiting the use of motorcycle in those areas became very necessary to check the recent security challenges constituted by the operators.

He also stated that the council also considered among other things, the health hazards it exposed  users to, the increasing cases of road

accidents involving the operators and reckless abuse of traffic rules.

The commissioner maintained that the decision was taken not to punish anybody but to ensure adequate security of life and property and check the health hazard it exposes the people, adding that efforts are being made to cushion the effect of the decision.
