The Enugu State House of Assembly, has adopted a motion, urging the state government to establish public libraries in the three senatorial zones of the state.

Presenting the motion during the plenary last Tuesday in Enugu, Mr Chinedu Nwamba (PDP-Nsukka East), said that establishment of such facility would make it easy for youths to access information.

“The provision of well equipped modern library that will be easily accessible to every interested citizen will assist in guarding against the incidence of lack of knowledge.

“It will also help in cultivating reading culture which is being eroded by global age of deceptive movies.’’

Nwamba regretted that after the establishment of the Central Library in Enugu in 1959, subsequent military/civilian administrations were unable to develop public library in the state.

In the motion co-sponsored by 17 others, the lawmakers urged the state library board, through the Ministry of Education, to incorporate the proposal in their budget estimate for 2013.

They also enjoined the state government to partner with the local government chairmen in the zones in establishing and equipping the libraries with modern ICT facilities.

Opening debate on the motion, the Leader of the Legislature, Mr Sunday Ude-Okoye (PDP- Awgu North), said the establishment of such library would increase reading culture and provide platform for borrowing of books.
