Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State, has directed those living around the territory of the new Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, to vacate the area.

Elechi gave the directive recently while inspecting facilities at the institution.

The governor who was in the company of Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Rufa’ reminded the residents that the government owns the land and was free to use it for any purpose.

“The Land Use Act gives the authority over all lands to the government, so let no one claim ownership of any land. We will, however, ensure that all affected persons are adequately compensated to ensure equity”, he said

The governor advised the people not to engage the services of private valuers to determine the worth of their properties as government would provide such for them.

“Do not be deceived by the antics of private valuers who would add their own cuts in the valuation process.

“The people should whole heartedly accept the existence of the university as it will bring unquantifiable level of development to them.”

He thanked the minister for the visit, saying the government would continue to contribute its quota to develop the institution.

Rufa’i expressed satisfaction with the pace of work at the institution.

“What we saw on ground indicates that the school will likely hold its first matriculation ceremony in September.

“We will pay equal attention to development of facilities at both the temporary and permanent sites to enhance accessibility and qualitative learning.”

She said the Federal Government had approved N1.5 billion for each the six new universities in the country with an additional N2 billion for infrastructure development.

The minister commended the state government for issuing the Certificate of Occupancy and other relevant documents to the university.
