Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, has appealed to the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) to intensify its developmental drive to justify the trust reposed on it by the electorate.

Dickson  made the appeal on Wednesday in Abuja when he led a delegation of the state’s PDP to pay a courtesy call on the party’s National Chairman Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

The governor said that the visit was to interact with the party‘s new leadership and to assure it that PDP in Bayelsa was committed to the implementation of the party‘s manifestoes.

“Nigerians have entrusted the destiny of our democracy in the hands of the party.

“We need to manage this in such a way that those that Nigerians do not trust with their mandates do not come from the back door to set an agenda for us.

“Therefore, we need to do more because to whom much is given, much is expected.

“It is our responsibility to continually ensure national unity and integration of the country, which is not the priority of opposition parties,’’ Dickson said.

He observed that the PDP in contemporary Nigerian politics, was faced with challenges because of the mandate given to it by Nigerians which it had to guard jealously.

Dickson noted that because of the party’s overwhelming majority in both the National and State Houses of Assembly, it could influence the constitution amendment to positively affect the lives of Nigerians.

On the scandal presently rocking the House of Representatives, Dickson described the development as “a normal thing that happens in a fledgling democracy’’.

He added that in spite of the scandal, he still believed in the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.

According to him, there are enough systems and rules, in the House to handle the situation.

He expressed optimism that the party‘s new leadership would justify the confidence reposed in it by party members who elected them into office.

Tukur, in his response, urged Dickson to ensure that PDP in Bayelsa “is made a role model for others to emulate.

“I thank the leadership of the party in Bayelsa State and urge you all to ensure that the PDP in the state is made an example of dedication and trust for all to emulate,’’ Tukur said.

He also called on all PDP members to embrace the party and support the Federal Government, stressing the need to ensure the unity and prosperity of the country.

He added that the party was supreme and big enough to accommodate all.
