Bayelsa Assembly Summons Council Chairmen
Worried by low performance by different local government council chairmen in the state, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has summoned council chairmen in the state to give account of their stewardship to the people.
This became imperative, because the chairmen are having less than a year to complete their tenure.
Beside receiving huge allocations, most the chairmen are said to be running their councils as sole administrator without seeking the input of their deputies and councillors.
Also invited to appear at the hallow chamber are the Councils’ Director of Works, Treasurers, and Directors of Personnel Management.
They are expected to offer some explanations based on some pending petitions written against the Chairmen by the aggrieved councilors.
In a motion under matters of urgent public importance, House Committee Chairman ,Ebipadei Fekoweimo, representing Yenagoa Constituency Two, said petitions before his office indicated that there were looming crisis in the councils.
Fekoweimo raised fears that if the brewing crisis was not checked ,that it would get out of hand.
Some members of the House added their voice on the spate of threats of impeachments by councillors on their chairmen ,describing it as worrisome .
The Committee Chairman cited the misappropriation of funds by some council chairmen as alleged by the councillors ,adding that the councillors do not want to come the councils again.
“The House through its committee had invited both parties to broker peace but to no avail. So, I decided to invite the Chairmen, Treasurers,Directors of Personnel Management and Directors of Works to appear on the 11th of July, “he said.”
It was gathered that most of the council chairmen had performed below expectation in the past two years as the allocations received so far was not commensurate with the development on ground.
