Anti-Terrorism Act Will Be Reviewed – Rep
Worried by the increasing rate of bomb attacks in the Northern part of the country, the National Assembly may soon review the Anti-terrorism Act with the aim of bringing it in tune with current realities.
This indication was given, at the weekend, by the member representing Akuku-Toru/Asari-Toru Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon Dawari George.
Hon. George, who spoke in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said though there was need to re-jig the act to make it more effective in addressing terrorism, laws alone might never solve issues like this unless the people are concerted in their efforts.
“Laws don’t make people, people make laws, so its only when the people make laws, enforce such laws and obey the laws that we can have the desired results”. Hon George stated.
He recommended a tripartite approach in which the three arms of government, namely the executive, the judiciary and legislature would work in tandem and play their various roles with utmost patriotism in order to overcome the monster terrorism.
According the lawmaker, even if the National Assembly makes a perfect law, how the judiciary interpretes such a law and how the executive enforces the law, determines the effectiveness of that law.
He said that the way the judiciary had responded to the cases of terrorism that had been brought before it was not very encouraging.
Hon. George was in Port Harcourt with members of the House Committee on Gas which toured facilities in Rivers State as part of their oversight function.
