Amaechi Reassures On Regular Power Supply
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has reiterated his government’s commitment to providing steady electricity to all parts of the state.
Governor Amaechi stated this while speaking as guest on the 91.7 Radio Port Harcourt special interview programme, Wednesday.
He pointed out that no matter what happens, there would be steady power supply in all parts of the state at the end of this year.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commissioner for Power, Augustine Wokocha has warned against further vandalism of power transmission towers in the state.
The commissioner handed down the warning during an inspection of some transmission towers that were destroyed as a result of the activities of vandals in Ndele Community of Emohua Local Government Area.
In an interview, the station manager of Omoku Gas Turbine, Mann Dokubo explained that people had been vandalising the towers leading to the inability of the government to supply power to the distribution power stations for distribution.
A director of electricity in the Ministry of Power, Dokiye Amama, who represented the commissioner during the inspection exercise, described the vandalism of the transmission towers as an act of sabotage to the efforts of the state government towards steady power supply.
He added that those communities where the equipment are located have a duty to protect them.
Said he: “The Governor of Rivers State has promised steady power supply to the people of the state. Such steady power supply are coming from the Omoku gas turbine and other power generating stations.”
“What it means is that there will be no power supply to Port Harcourt for now until these towers are replaced. The areas that are being powered by the tower are going to be in darkness for now, so, we need to contact the various local government chairmen where these power lines pass through so that they can help to meet with their chiefs and see how these communities can police these lines.
In another development, men of the Rumuji Police Station in Emohual Local Government Area have arrested three suspects in connection with the vandalism of power transmission towers. They were due to appear in court on the 27th of July.
