Amaechi Cup To Restore PH City’s Sporting Glory

The maiden edition of the football tournament for clubs within the old Township and Borokiri axis of Port Harcourt City, Rivers State tagged ‘Amaechi cup’ is set to rekindle the sporting glory days of the city.

This was the declaration of the chair of the Local Orgamising Committee, LOC of the competition, Mr. Dabo-Ere Dokubo during a press briefing to herald the commencement of the tournament.

According to Dokubo, the competition scheduled to kick off of the 21st of this month is designed by the Rivers State Government, Rt. Hon.  Chibuike Amaechi and powered by the Ministry of Sports.

He said that the Governor wanted to use the tournament to stimulate the return of the old days when every youth within the city was eager to express his talent in Sports.

“In the good old days, you’ll see people playing football, tennis or other kind of games into midnight in the city, that is what this tournament is seeking to bring back”, said Dokubo.

The chairman noted that the governor is doing a wonderful job in the old Township with the provision of modern Sports facilities, especially basketball, Tennis courts, football fields and swimming pools among others, to engage and empower the youths.

He stated that talents discovered during the Amaechi Cup tourney would be harnessed and exposed to greater opportunities afterwards.

Meanwhile, the competition is exclusively for clubs and players resident within the old Port Harcourt Township and Borokiri axis of the city.

Already, 32 clubs have registered while the draws for the group stage of the competition will be held on Sunday at the No1 Field, venue of the matches. The day will also witness a pre-tournament match between selected sides from old Township and Borokiri to test run facilities.
