Amaechi Cup: LOC Chairman Lauds Talents On Show
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the ongoing Old Port Harcourt Township/Borokiri Soccer competition in Port Harcourt has pledged to select talented players from the championship for international competitions.
Chairman of the LOC, Mr Dabo-Ere Dokubo, who disclosed this to in Port Harcourt, lauded talents on display at the competition which is tagged: “Amaechi Cup”.
“The level and quality of players in this competition are very good; they have shown a high level of discipline and dedication at the tournament.
“The championship will enable us select the best crop of young and talented players that will represent the state in national and international age-group competitions,” Dokubo said.
He expressed optimism that the tournament, which was still in its first round stage, would assist the state to discover many new talents.
The chairman, therefore, urged players to take advantage of the competition to impress scouts from the Nigerian Premier League.
Dokubo reiterated that N18 million would be shared as prize money at the tournament, with the winners collecting N10 million, runners-up, N5 million and the third-place winners N3 million.
“The event will not end there; we are also planning to select players for international competitions,” Dokubo said.
Dokubo said that the tournament, which is sponsored by the state’s Ministry of Sports, was to showcase young talents in the state.
“The competition will cut across the state as we are progressing, but we want to begin with the youth living in old Port Harcourt Township and Borokiri,” he added.
Coach Hutton London of Bille Street Team said that the competition, which aims at taking unemployed youths off the streets, would also help to stem crime in the state.
