Casual Workers Protest Sack By Nigeria Engineering Works
Casual workers of the Nigerian Engineering Works (NEW) owners of the brand name NEWCLIME have protested over the sudden order of the company’s management to disengage them.
Some of the affected workers stormed The Tide premises carrying placards with various inscription “Slavery in Nigerian Engineering Works,” “After long years of service, no benefit”, Please government come to the aid of your children,” among others.
The spokesman of the group, Mr Hyacinth Nwaobiri said the action of the management of the company was detrimental to their efforts towards surviving the present economic hardship.
He said the casual workers have served for between three and 17 years, regretting that they were being sacked at a time when their services with the company would have been regularised.
Mr Nwaobiri said “we have worked with the company for so many years, we have put in our best in the services of the company, hoping that very soon, we will be employed or confirmed as permanent pensionable staff only to hear that we have been sacked.”
He said the act was a great injustice to the affected 41 casual workers, stressing that the Labour Law of Nigeria demanded that casual worker appointment be regularised after three months probational period.
The casual workers’ spokesman said that the management of the company had agreed to pay them off with one month salary in lieu of notice which they have rejected as that would amount to their compromising their collective stand against injustice meted to them by the company’s management.
However, counsel to the casual workers T. U Nmah JP of Celestine Omehia and Associates had petitioned the company to the State House of Assembly.
A copy of the petition made available to The Tide dated 10th July 2012 drew the attention of the Honourable Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly to the case of abuse of Labour, dehumanisation and enslavement of workers at the company by the expatriates management.
Barrister T. U. Nmah said the law office write the letter to protect the rights of the workers with a view of the state House of Assembly intervening to protect the oppressed and ensure equity and fair play.
He said, “the law firm passionately appeal to the leadership of the House to intervene and call the company to order to avoid anarchy and civil unrest in our dear state.”
When The Tide visited the company’s office at Trans Amadi, The Tide met with the Human Resources Manager, Mr Bethel M. Karibo who denied that the affected casual workers are ever staff of the company. He said, “the casual workers are contractor workers, I have not dropped any of my workers”, maintaining “we don’t have casual workers on our staff list.”
The manager said the issue of casual worker in the company was long settled in 1999 when people recruited then were offered temporary staff and later confirmed staff by the company.
He challenged the casual workers to show their staff identify card if it really belonged to the company or the contractor, Mr Joseph Obah who engaged them.
Mr Karibo said there is conducive industrial peace between the senior and junior staff unions with the company management.
The chairman of the Steel Engineering Workers Union of Nigeria (SEWUN) within the company, Comrade Norbari Banah appealed to the company management to assist the affected workers by liaising with the contractor for adequate compensation to the affected casual workers.
