Uranta Faults Nigeria’s Democracy
Nigeria is yet to create the enabling environment for true democracy to strive, thirteen years after civil rule was instituted in the country.
The local facilitator of Commission of Noble Laureates to the Niger Delta (CNLND), Chief Tony Uranta who stated this in a telephone chat with The Tide called on the National Assembly to enact laws that would allow leaders to be held accountable.
Uranta who is also the secretary of the National Summit Group (NSG) noted that the country’s system of government has not created enough avenues of ensuring true democracy.
“According to him, “Democracy is still nascent required attitudinal change in the system. We must change our values, our value, have been eroded he said”.
He said although, democracy is better than military rule, all stakeholders should join hands to ensure that real democracy is practiced.
On the chances of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 election, Chief Uranta said the president has the right to contest in 2015, if his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) considers him their flag bearer.
“For me, I see nothing wrong if President Goodluck Jonathan wants to run in 2015. It is up to Nigerians to accept or reject him of the right to remain in government through their vote” he said.
He, however, urged Nigerians to look at the performance of the president and decide his fate if he declare his intention in 2015.
