Unions Reject Increase In Electricity Tariff

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and affiliate unions have rejected in its entirety the proposed plan by the Federal Government to increase the electricity tariff.

In a statement after their congress meeting in Port Harcourt, when the unions stated that they expected the Federal Government to justify the huge expenditure in the power sector since the advent of this democracy by first giving Nigerians power before talking about increasing electricity tariff.

The Union Leaders said, it is sad and unfortunate that the Federal Government is planning to increase electricity tariff at a time when Nigerians were expecting to see dividends of the various power sector investments.

The unions said that the electricity tariff increase was unacceptable to Nigerians and the organised labour, stressing that in partnership with the civil society the organsied labour will resist the proposed change in the electricity tariff.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government approved through the National Electricity Regulatory Commission NERC an increase in electricity tariff from June 1, 2012.
