Sports Dev: RSG Ready To Partner With Corporate Bodies

Rivers State Government, has said it would develop sports at all levels and eager to partner with corporate organisations to promote sporting activities in the state.

The commissioner for sports in the state, Hon. Fred Igwe said this in his opening address, at the British Council Festival of Olympics Dreams, held at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, yesterday.

According to him, the sports ministry would like to partner with the British Council which has organized such a laudable programme in an effort to place sports at the service of humanity, free of all forms of discrimination and transgression of limits.

“The Rivers State governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi holds dear to his heart the development of sports, education and other spheres of government.”

“Rivers State government encourages the development of sports at all levels and co-operates with competent organizations and authorities such as the British Council in that regards”, Igwe said.

Hon. Igwe revealed that the ministry of sports is partnering with the Ministry of Education and Youth Development to ensure that its sports policy has maximum effect on all persons in the state.

“In the state, we have role models that combined sports and education, that have remained resourceful to their families, state and the society at large,” he said.

The state sports boss used the forum to advise students to be focused and determined in their education and sports, particularly the schools that are participating in the festival Olympic competition.

Speaking, the Centre Manager of British Council in the state, Ijeoma Aguba, said the major reason for the festival of Olympic dream, is to celebrate the Olympic values that would be held in London.

According to her, it is to help the young people to develop their various talents and promote peace in all the coutries.

“Our major reason in celebrating the Olympic values and helping young people to develop their talents,” Aguba said.

She continued that the 14 schools that are participating in the competition are schools that are identifying with the British Council, in terms of their examinations.

“I want to say that this competition is to promote friendship, sports, arts and culture,” she added.
