An Enugu Chief Magistrates’ Court has remanded one Wisdom Okereke in prison custody for failing to apply for bail in a case of alleged false information to the police.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs J.L.C. Okibe, said the accused should remain in prison pending the bail application by his counsel.

Okereke is standing trial on a two-count charge of giving false information to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Enugu police command that kidnappers had entered Enugu to abduct a Chinese engineer working with a construction company.

He was also accused of collecting the sum of N11,000 from Jude Agbanajelu, a deputy superintendent of police, under the pretence to deliver the kidnappers to the command.  The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Ben Anikwe, earlier pleaded with the court to grant him bail with leniency.

Anikwe prayed that the accused was ready to provide a surety if the court granted him the bail.

But the prosecuting counsel, Mrs A.U. Akpa, asked the court not to grant the bail since his matter was also pending at the state high court.

She said the defence counsel should first apply for his bail to enable the court to consider it.
