Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has urged the three tiers of government nationwide to initiate welfare programmes for their citizens.

Gowon gave the advice in Benin on Wednesday at the distribution of free eye glasses programme on behalf of Gov. Adams Oshiomhole.

The programme was designed for pensioners and persons above 60 years living in the state

“I left California to honour Oshiomhole’s invitation for this free eye glasses programme and to commission 12 major roads in Benin because I stand for development. “I am using this opportunity to call on Oshiomhole and all tiers of government to institute social welfare programmes to care for their people, particularly as they advance in age.

Gowon urged all levels of government to work toward providing amenities for the people and not to deprive them of development.

The former head of state, however, said Oshiomhole had fulfilled his electoral promises to the populace and called on the citizens, especially individuals and corporate bodies to cooperate with the government.

Gowon said: “the only way to cooperate with Oshiomhole is to vote for him for second term to enable him to continue his developmental strives’’.

“The eyes are the light to the soul, this is an opportunity for enjoyment of a new good sight.”

He commended the governor’s cabinet for its team work and placing priority on public interest.

Earlier, Oshiomhole said the administration had concluded plans to ensure that the elders in the society enjoyed special health package.

He added that some of his mates in his village had sight problems due to their inability to pay bills for eye screening and glasses.
