The Ebonyi Government has directed the state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources to recover the revolving loans given to some farmers in the state in 2008 through their guarantors.

The  Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Mr Chike Onwe, stated this on Thursday while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the state Executive Council meeting in Abakaliki.

“Council frowns at the attitude of farmers who failed to repay the loan meant to last for the period of one year to enable more farmers benefit from the scheme.

“The government is therefore giving a directive to the ministry to withhold the salaries of the guarantors until the loan is fully recovered.”

On tractors hired by some farmers, the commissioner said the government had recovered its tractors in the possession of individuals in the state.

Government has also set up a committee to work out modalities to auction the tractors to boost food production.”

According to Onwe, the government has concluded arrangements to construct a flyover at Akanu-Ibiam roundabout in Abakaliki, the state capital.

He explained that contract for the project would be awarded as soon as the design was completed.

He said the fly-over, which is expected to be completed within 18 months, would ease the traffic flow in the town.
