Dame Amaechi Tasks Women On Elective Positions

First Lady of Rivers State, Dame Judith Amaechi, has challenged women in the state to indicate interest to vie for elective positions in future election.

Dame Amaechi stated this when a delegation of PDP women leaders across the 23 local government areas of the state paid her a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.

She stated that women who have been given opportunities either elected in previous elections or appointed to other positions have distinguished themselves.

The governor’s wife further stated that with such sterling performance on the part of women both elected and appointed, more women should rise and aspire for higher position in future election.

“It is very worthy to note that women elected or appointed to public offices have distinguished themselves in such assignment, this is a big encouragement and I urge you all to declare early enough your intention to vie for offices”.

Mrs Amaechi, who described local government administration as a veritable instrument of grassroots democracy enjoined the women leaders to provide selfless leadership to the people and learn to be in harmony with their leaders.

“I charge you to see your position as a call to duty, respect your leaders and serve your people with the fear of God”.

She added that a Women Development Centre will soon be built to enable women develop their entrepreneurial skills.

The governor’s wife disclosed an increase in women population at local government administration, and thanked the women leaders for mobilizing the women for the door-to-door campaign during the 2011 general elections. “Today, we have 45 Councillors, two Rep Members, one Chairman, Deputy Chairman, we will continue to count, let’s work collectively to achieve our goals”.

Leader of the group, Madam Justina Emeji said they were in Government House to appreciate the First Lady and her husband for the good work they are doing in the state, and added that the new women leaders have come to pledge their support for the government.

She pledged the women’s determination to uplift the place of the women at the grassroots politics.
