A fifty-one year old man, Uche Nwamaranma, has been arraigned before a Port Harcourt Chief Magistrate Court presided over by I.F. Iyiabo for rape charge.

The accused Uche Nwamaranma was said to have on the 10th of June, 2012 at N0. 31 Standard Road, Elelenwo, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State unlawfully raped eleven year old girl, Miss Julie Thompson without her consent.

The prosecuting Police Officer, Inspector Wilson Isaiah said the court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the matter based on the degree of the offence committed by the accused person.

He however, told the court that the girl is responding to treatment from the injuries she sustained during the rape.

The presiding Chief Magistrate, I.F. Iyiabo said with the offence committed by the accused person the court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the case and directed that the case file be sent to the office of Director of Public prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

He ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and told the accused person that he has the right to approach High Court for his bail.

The case was later adjourned to 31/8/2012.
