The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), has called on building engineers to visit sites regularly, to reduce cases of building collapses.

A member of COREN’s Monitoring Team, Mr Mayas Adoyi, made the call in Abuja on Thursday during the team’s visit to building sites.

He emphasised the need for engineers to be constant on sites to assess materials in use and recommend the standard types.

Earlier, Chief Assistant Registrar (Engineering) of the council, Mr Alhassan Aliyu, re-affirmed the council’s commitment to ensuring adherence to professional standard practices.

According to him, the inspection and monitoring will save lives, investments and property and eliminate quacks in the profession.

“The inspection will mostly address the issue of incessant building collapse in the country. ’’

Aliyu stressed that COREN’s enabling laws insisted on the use of registered engineers, drawings, plans and designs as approved by the Development an d Control Board.

Aliyu expressed dismay at what the team saw in some sites.

The team gave the managing directors of the sites one week to provide all documents needed or face sanctions.
