Cleric Advises Motorists On Road Ethics

Pastor Bethel Ogbonnaya of Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries, Onitsha, has told motorists in the country to exercise caution while on the roads to reduce road accidents.

Ogbonnaya gave the advice in a sermon on Sunday after a road enlightenment campaign by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) led by the Onitsha Unit Commander of the commission, Mr Fred Okoh.

The cleric said that from his 30 years experience in driving, he had found out that up to 90 per cent of road crashes in the county were caused by human factors.

According to him, these can be controlled if motorists and other road users are cautious and patient.

“The issue of over-speeding, using of poor quality motor parts and bad road habits are all caused by human beings, especially those on the steering.

“Moreso, the neglect of road signs, speed limits, lack of daily check on one’s vehicle and care-free attitude to instructions of uniformed officers and men are also human factors.

“So we must join hands with the FRSC to create a safe road; teach our children the best way to use and behave on the roads.

‘’Since the human being causing the accident might implicate other road users in his obvious mistake,’’ Ogbonnaya said.

The cleric, however, cautioned officers and men of the commission not to use their position for extortion and high- handedness.

According to him, they should work as men contended with their wages and show the Christ-like light to everyone.

Okoh told the congregation that it was the duty of the officers and men of the commission to protect and safeguide their lives while on the road since they were paid to do so.

“Over 80 per cent of road crashes recorded in Onitsha is caused by human factors, which are avoidable if we take caution and put the interest of other road users at heart.

“This commission does not take delight in booking and issuing fines for offenders but that our roads would be safe for everybody.

“That is why you must partner and obey us while doing our duty of protecting your lives on the roads,’’ Okoh said.
