Chevron, Community Renew GMoU

Chevron Nigeria Limited has restated its commitment to the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) process, a community engagement model applied within its areas of operation.

General Manager, Policy Government and Public Affairs, Engr. Femi Odumabo, reassured this commitment during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and signing of a renewed GMoU with the Idama Community in Port Harcourt, last week.

Odumabo who was represented by the Area Manager, Port Harcourt, Joe Jakpa said Chevron would continue to support the GMoU process and comply with the terms of agreement between its partners, and called on the Idama Community to avail themselves of the GMoU for the overall development of the community.

He thanked the development partners in the GMoU, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the River State government and its joint venture partner, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

In his remark, the Rivers State Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Charles Okaye commended Chevron for its development initiative as exemplified in the GMoU Process.

He pledged the support of the state government to the GMoU Process and called on the community to strictly abide by the terms of the GMoU.

Earlier, the chairman, Idama Empowerment Development Association,  Mr Innocent Karibo assured that all funds provided by the company in the GMoU would be judiciously used.

Meanwhile, the company says it has reduced gas flaring and venting in its operation by 33 percent between 2003 to date and achieved one of the best safety records in the oil and gas industry.

Its 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report (CRR) said it also invested $ 209 million in its operational communities and spent more than $2.1 billion on goods and services from Small US businesses.
