The Controller of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Port Harcourt branch, Mr Ken Effa, has charged practising journalists in the country to always uphold the ethics of the profession as they discharge their social responsibility to the society.

He made the call Wednesday in Port Harcourt when EMOLGA Journalist Association World-wide, confered on him Excellent Achievers Award for his distinct passion in repositioning the Central Bank of Nigeria, Port Harcourt branch.

The controller said in the present stage of the nation’s development, much was being expected from the press especially in the economic reform embarked upon by the present administration.

It is important that you inform the masses who form part of your readership so that they properly understand the direction we are going and it is only when your report is accurate and unbiased that the actions of the people will be well guided” he said.

He also advised members of the association to carry out campaigns against youth involvement in anti-social activities to all nooks and crannies of Nigerian society stressing that when youths who are the hopeful leaders of the nation’s future shun activities inimical to the corporate existence of the various ethnic groups and are properly engaged in useful ventures that the future could be secured.

Earlier in his speech, chairman of the group, Kennedy Wedeh said the Port Harcourt branch of the apex bank had experienced a serious turn around under the administration of Mr. Effa in terms of improved service delivery and physical structure, noting that indigenes of the state would never forget his efforts.

Mr Wedeh emphasised that the honour was the association’s humble way of appreciating the commitment of the controller and urged other public office holders in the state to emulate the CBN controller.

“As a public officer serving in Rivers State, the best way you can be remembered by the people of the state is by living enduring legacies that would speak for you when eventually you are no longer there,” said Wedeh.

The association he said was an agent of positive change interested in promoting good governance and strengthening democracy, eradicating communal sentiment, encouraging youth education and protect the cultural heritage of our people, amongst others.

He said since inception of the body, it had monitored developmental activities in Emohua communities, embarked on inspection of educational and health facilities, and embarked on campaign against HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, female circumcision, and youth restiveness through town hall meetings.

He also stated that the body intends to organise quiz competitions among the various primary and secondary schools in the state where awards would be given to the best three performing schools in the state.

In his reaction to the honour done him, Mr Effa said, “I appreciate with humility and thank you for the award,” and assured the group of his renewed determination to uphold the distinct passion seen in me.”
