The Speaker of the Fifth Abia House of Assembly,  Mr Ude Oko-Chukwu ,  says 13 bills have been passed into law in one year.

He made the disclosure on Tuesday in Umuahia at a news conference to mark the activities of the House since its inauguration on June 8, 2011.

Oko-Chukwu said the balance of 11 bills, out of the total number of 24 bills which the House received during the period, were “at various stages of legislative considerations and actions.’’

The Speaker said that the Assembly held 76 plenary sessions during which eight motions and 61 resolutions on topical issues were also passed.

Other ancillary responsibilities discharged by the House during the period, he said, included the renovation of the assembly complex.

Oko-Chukwu explained that the House provided the “necessary framework to support concerted efforts designed to guarantee peace, stability, security, justice, good governance and sustainable development in Abia.

‘’We have continued to contend with challenges and we are willing to take on new challenges for the common good of the people of Abia.

‘’As we go into another legislative year of serious legislative business, there is going to be greater zeal, synergy and collaboration.’’

Oko-Chukwu said that the legislators could not afford to betray the confidence reposed in them by the people.

He solicited the continued support of the people to enable the House discharge its duties efficiently.

Answering questions from newsmen, the Speaker explained that the House also performed its oversight functions over the ministries, departments and agencies of government.

He, however, said that “the House never had any terrible case of fraud.”
