Abe Decries Delay On UNEP Report Implementation

Rivers South-East Senatorial District, in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe has expressed concern over the delay in implementation of the United Nation Environmental Programme (UNEP) Report, of October 2011.

Senator Abe made his feeling known in an interview with The Tide in Bori, the traditional headquarter of Ogoni Kingdom.

According to him, Federal Government had set up implementation Committee approved by the National Assembly but it was unfortunate that the committee has not been empowered to commenced its assignment in the area.

However, the senator assured the people of Ogoni that the UNEP report would soon be implemented, as much pressure is being mounted on the Federal Government to implement the report.

Also speaking the World Youth Leader and also Ogoni Youth Leader, Comrade Marvin Yobanna said, the Federal Government was playing politics over the implementation of the report, as it s delaying the implementation of report.

He called on the Federal Government not to take the peaceful disposition of Ogoni people on the environmental degradation of the Ogoni land for granted.

Also speaking, the Acting Chairman of Movement of the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Dr. Ben Nnanne said, Ogoni people would reject any environmental cleaning and assessment committee set-up on Ogoni area by Federal Government, if Ogoni persons were not included.

Dr. Nnanne said, the Ogonis were concerned about thorough clean up of the area, and the possibility of reviving the area for the people to regain their source of livelihoods that for years had been degraded by Shell Company and its agencies.

He called on the people of Ogoni to remain peaceful, as MOSOP with its peaceful approach would ensure justice prevailed in Ogoniland.

He also called on the Federal Government to fast track its implementation more to ensure more lives are saved in the area.
