TUC Demands Decent Work Conditions
The Trade Union Congress has demanded for decent work conditions from the various employers in line with international practices.
The State Secretary of the TUC Comrade Ogunu Okere stated this while speaking to newsmen during the May Day celebration in Port Harcourt.
He said the workers must be accorded the core labour standards of freedom of collective bargaining, elimination of forced and compulsory labour, and elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
He said that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) declaration addresses the challenges facing workers to reduce poverty and create sustainable development.
Comrade Okere said “decent work condition ensures that workers are productive and their rights protected to generate adequate income with social protection”.
He further stated that decent work condition is a key to lifting the workers for productivity. The union secretary called on the government to adopt the United Nations Assembly resolution of 2008 to support decent work conditions for the workers, to make the goals of full employment a central objective of poverty reduction among workers.
He said the TUC will demand that the various stakeholders, employers and governments ensure that workers are provided decent working conditions to ensure meaningful productivity in their working environment.
