PDP Chieftain Tasks Obi On LG Polls
A PDP chieftain in Onitsha, Anambra, Mr Harold Ekwerekwu,
has called on Gov. Peter Obi to conduct local government elections in the State
to bridge the gap in its governance.
Ekwerekwu told newsmen in Onitsha on Wednesday that the
people at the grassroots were not feeling the impact of governance for six
years now.
He said the governor should conduct the elections and should
stop deferring it with excuses, adding that the people at the grassroots were
getting frustrated.
“True sovereignty belongs to the people and local government
election is the only way they could participate and influence the governance of
the day and bring dividends of democracy to better their lives.
“The people at the grassroots are getting tired of the
gimmick been deployed by the governor and his party for six years, leaving the
people impoverished,” he said.
The chieftain lauded President Goodluck Jonathan for his
all-inclusive style of leadership and patience even in the face of provocation.
“Gov. Obi should learn from Mr President and leader of our
great party to open the political arena of the state and help to empower the
people and check the current rural-to-urban drift.
“Local government in Anambra would help to reduce the
pressure of empowerment and job creation at the state and federal levels,” he
added.
Reacting, Chief Ifeanyi Udokwu, the Deputy Chairman of APGA
in Anambra, said the party wanted LG elections more than any other party in the
state.
Udokwu said the party was sure of winning 75 per cent of the
seats at the council level.
“Obi, being the leader of our party, wants the election and
he is ready to conduct the election which we know that we will win as the only
party with solid structure on ground in Anambra.
“But the problem lies with the Anambra State Independent
Electoral Commission. The commission should come out and tell the people of
Anambra why the election has been delayed for long,” Udokwu said.
