The National Boundary Commission has appealed to the federal and state governments to accord boundary issues priority attention to ensure quick resolution of boundary disputes in the country.

Dr  Mohammed Ahmad, the Director-General of the Commission, made the appeal in Awka on Thursday when he led members of the commission to visit Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra.

“This will ensure that all stages in the resolution process of inter-state boundaries are pursued diligently and as quickly as possible to take advantage of continuity and fresh memories of field issue.’’

He noted that inter-state boundary dispute resolution process had not been pursued vigorously to a logical conclusion due to many factors that could be put at the door steps of both the federal and state governments.

Such factors, he explained, included long gaps between meetings, which had the disadvantages of loss of tracks on the efforts and achievements due to changes in schedules or retirement of officials.

Ahmad announced that the team was in the South-East geo-political zone to discuss the inter-state boundary matter between Anambra and Imo.

He explained that the meeting would discuss the efforts made on the boundary issue and workout a programme of action toward resolution of dispute between the two states.

Ahmad lauded the people of the state for the maintenance of peace in their common inter-state boundaries with their neighbours.

“The Commission is encouraged by the prevailing peace and accordingly poised to do everything possible to ensure that your boundaries are clearly defined on the ground as quickly as possible.’’

Responding, Obi pointed out that the boundary matter between the state and Enugu was the most contentious and urged the commission to work towards proper demarcation of the border between the two states.

He expressed the readiness of the people of the state to continue to live in peace with people of all neighbouring states to engender social and economic development of the area.
