Kidnappers Abduct Female Ophthalmologist, Demand N100m Ransom
Unknown kidnappers have abducted a
consultant ophthalmologist, Dr Taibat Otulana of Olabisi Onabanjo University,
Ago-Iwoye, according to a statement by the chairman of Medical and Dental
Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Ogun chapter.
Dr Olusoji Jagun said on Monday that
Otulana, a honorary consultant ophthalmologist with Olabisi Onabanjo University
Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, was kidnapped on Friday.
He said her abductors were demanding N100
million for her freedom.
It was gathered that Otulana was kidnapped
at Imota, a suburb of Lagos, on her way to Ijebu Ode.
It would be recalled that four medical
doctors were kidnapped in 2011.
The statement by MDCAN declared: “As one of
our members, we feel highly insecured and psychologically stressed over this
unfortunate incident.
“The question on the lips of every member
is who is the next doctor to be kidnapped?” the statement said.
The statement said the incident could be
linked to the “unguided utterances of some government officials who went
advertising inflated salaries of medical doctors, which gave the public a false
impression …..”
“Enough is enough, our jobs are killing, we
work under unimpressive conditions and the only reward for our work is
kidnapping”.
They appealed to the abductors to release
Otulana “with immediate effect”.
