Izzi Community Gets Comprehensive Health Centre
The Ominyi Development Centre, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi, has constructed a comprehensive healthcare facility to check increasing cases of maternal and infant mortality in the area.
The Coordinator of the centre, Mr Benjamin Ofoke, made this known on Saturday at Izzi, near Abakaliki, during an assessment tour of the area.
Ofoke said that inadequate facilities in the area was affecting the health of the people, especially pregnant women and infants.
“The centre has, as a matter of urgency, built a befitting health facility and working on the establishment of more while three motorcycles have been purchased to convey pregnant and sick people to hospitals.
“We had to give healthcare delivery priority in view of the rural nature of this place and the distance to the council area.
“Just last year, a pregnant woman died before we could get her to the nearest health facility and many other cases of health related problems plaguing this Centre.”
Ofoke said that despite the lean resources of the centre, it had been able to establish three additional health posts in the area as well as constructed and rehabilitated 40 km of road network at a cost of N13 million.
“Last year, we purchased and distributed 200 bags of fertiliser to farmers free of charge while the farmers also received a grant of N660,000.
“We have opened up the Okpoduma-Abarigwe-Ndiogogo road to facilitate the evacuation of agricultural produce to the urban areas.”
According to the coordinator, the centre has also made remarkable achievements in the education sector, including the distribution of 15,000 exercise books to the 35 primary schools in the area.
