At least 238 road accidents were recorded in Anambra, Delta and Edo States in the first quarter of 2012, a top official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Zone 5, said.

Mr. Yakubu Attah, the out-going Assistant Corps Marshal in-charge of Zone 5, made this known in an interview with newsmen  in Onitsha last Thursday.

Our correspondent reports that Zone 5 of FRSC covers Anambra, Delta and Edo States.

Attah said out of the total accident figure, 72 were fatal with 136 lives lost in the crashes, adding that 101 of the victims were male, 27 female and eight children.

The out-going assistant corps marshall said that the road crashes recorded within the period under review, showed a reduction in such mishaps compared to the same period in 2011, when 267 road accidents were witnessed with 174 fatalities in 55 fatal crashes.

“I must tell you that it has been very challenging; but one encouraging factor that I needed to work with was the decisive leadership qualities as displayed by the Corp Marshal and Chief Executive, Osita Chidoka.

“That gave me encouragement to lead my people; my subordinates were working as a team; and that’s why we have achieved all this feat because the rate of road traffic crashes reduced by the first quarter of this year compared to the first quarter of 2011.
