Enugu To Begin Demolition Of Illegal Structures

All illegal structures in  Enugu, the capital city of Enugu state including, those located in various church premises will be demolished by the Ministry,  Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority.

 The Commissioner in charge of the ministry, Engr Ikechukwu Ugwuegede, who disclosed this while addressing newsmen in his office stated that already notice had been given to owners of such illegal structures to remove them without delay as no form of  compensation would be paid by his ministry in respect of the affected structures.

According to him, in order to check indiscriminate erection of illegal structures especially within the Enugu metropolis, “We already have in place municipal courts to try offenders”, adding that this would serve as deterrent to those who may wish to erect illegal structures in the capital city in the near future.

The commissioner also used the forum to disclose that already, his ministry has the endorsement of both the Federal and the Enugu state governments for the relocation of the Enugu Prisons, expressing happiness that suitable site had been found.

In addition, commissioner Ugwuegede  further revealed that the over 890 shop owners at the Old Park would soon be relocated markets where they ought to be, pointing out that his ministry has no plans to relocate the Ogbete Main Market as only free access to the market would be created to enable people go in and out of the market without difficulties.

His words: “We also have plans to relocate traders at the Kenyata market. We equally have plans to develop furniture village. The ministry also has the intention to recover about 16 Parks from private individuals”, he further stressed.

He, however, warned agents and staff of government against flouting of government laws, adding that henceforth, offenders would be arrested and prosecuted, to serve as deterrent to others.

Maintaining that no approval has been given for now by the ministry for establishment of petrol filling stations within the Enugu metropolis , Mr. Ugwuegede said: “We intend to discourage indiscriminate pasting of posters within the capital city of Enugu.
