The new chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Mechanical Engineers, Rivers State Chapter, Engr Goodluck Chukwuka Ikenyiri, says Nigeria would only develop faster if the election and appointment of citizens into political positions are based on professionalism and experts in the country.

Engr Ikenyiri made the assertion Tuesday at the 3rd inauguration of the Rivers State Chapter of the body held in Port Harcourt.

He identified lack of good policy formulation by the Nigerian government, appointment and election of non-professionals and uncredible persons into governance in the country, as the crux of our problems

He used the medium to appeal to the National Assembly and State Houses of Assemblies in the country to amend the relevant sections of the electoral law to ensure that competent persons are elected or appointed to hold positions of trust in government.

“No country will develop if the government does not rely on professionals and experts,” he said.

He commended Governor Chibuike Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers State for the quality of projects going on in the state, saying that it is an indication of the involvement of professional engineers and experts in the execution of the projects.

Engr Ikenyiri called on the government and various stakeholders to support Mechanical Engineers with serious political will to enable them brace up to the challenges in the construction and building of projects to develop the society.

He also tasked the Engineers in the state to see the development of the state as a challenge for Engineers in terms of quality projects.
