Drainage Blockage: Supervisor Warns Nsukka Residents
The Supervisor of Works in Nsukka Local Government Area, Mr Kingsley Ugwoke, has urged residents of the council headquarters to stop throwing waste inside drainage channels to avoid blockage.
Ugwoke told newsmen in Nsukka on Monday that the ongoing clearing of the drainage system by the council was to enhance free flow of water during the rainy season.
“The local government’s intention of clearing gutters and blocked water drainage channels is to enhance the free flow of water during and after rainfall.
“The government’s effort to make Nsukka to always look neat will not yield the required result if residents continue in their habit of throwing their waste inside gutter during rainfall.
“The task to keep Nsukka clean must be a collective responsibility of all residents,’’ he said adding that the council was spending huge amounts of money to clear gutters to improve the environmental condition of the town.
The supervisor urged the residents to make use of dumpsters placed at different locations.
“It is because of the seriousness the LG attaches to environment sanitation that it constructed some dustbins to complement the Enugu State Waste Management Agency in achieving clean environment,’’ he said.
Ugwoke said the residents had no reason to dump wastes in the gutter because there were enough waste bins in the town.
“We should know that proper disposal of wastes helps in improving our environmental sanitation as well as our health,” he said.
