A lecturer in the Department of Accounting,
Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Prof. Benjamin Osisioma,  has urged politicians in the country to
pursue the goal of servant-leadership.

Osisioma made the call in Awka last Tuesday
at a conference on value re-orientation organised by the Nigeria Union of
Journalists (NUJ) in conjunction with Orient Magazine Newspaper and
Communications Ltd.

“When leaders fail to practise
servant-leadership, they degenerate into self-service; this self-service could
be a virus that will destroy their claims to true leadership.”

Osisioma, who was the pioneer
Director-General, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), noted
that good leaders measured their success by the quality of life of those they
led.

He expressed regret that politicians in
Nigeria would not base their convictions and practice on principles, values and
norms that defined excellent character.

“Their sole aim is to serve themselves and
the masters that put them up.

Refering to Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Osisioma
said “the leadership style of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe made him stand head and
shoulders above every politician and statesman of epoch’’.

“Even till today, he has remained a
reference point in character, articulation, sagacity and good conduct.”

The lecturer stressed the need for leaders,
especially those from the South-East, to strive for the highest and the best
for the people.
