Twenty-one persons were arrested and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment by a Senior Magistrates’ Mobile Court on Saturday in Osogbo, for violating the bi-monthly environmental sanitation laws and regulations.

The terms of imprisonment ranged from one-month to six months.

The convicted persons were, however, given options of fines ranging from N500 to N5,000.

The Senior Magistrate, Francis Omisade, however, cautioned and discharged five other violators.

Our correspondent who monitored the exercise in Osogbo, Ofa-tedo, Okinni and Ilobu, reports that movement of vehicles and people were restricted.

Our corresponent also reports that waste disposal workers and members of the State Youth Empowerment Scheme (OYES) were seen clearing filth from the drains and enforcing the restriction order.

A cross-section of Osogbo residents commended the efforts of the state government in making the state habitable through the introduction of the bi-monthly environmental sanitation.

Mr Ladi Ajayi, a resident, observed that Osogbo had been transformed to a befitting state capital by adequate disposal of waste and regular clearing of drainage.
