Chime Urges Workers To Re-Invent Public Service
Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has called on workers in the state to join hands with his administration in its effort towards reinventing the public service and making it a model.
Governor Chime who made the call through the Head of Service, Nze Dennis Eze during the 2012 Workers Day celebration, at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu recently, assured that government would always give due attention to the welfare of workers in the state.
The Governor noted that the level and pace of development and advancement of any society were largely dependent on the resourcefulness, competence and dedication of its workforce.
He added that it was therefore imperative that employers both in the public and private sectors should take deliberate measures to safeguard the welfare and rights of workers to ensure their commitment and productivity.
Workers he said, were expected to discharge their responsibilities with diligence and devotion to ensure the sustenance and advancement of their establishments.
The Governor, however, commended workers in the State for their efforts towards maintaining industrial harmony despite the fact that some anti-social elements and unpatriotic politicians have sought to exploit real or imagined differences between government and labour to foment trouble.
Governor Chime further noted that such efforts have always failed because workers in the state would always refuse to be fooled, pointing out that disagreements and disputes between employers and workers are inevitable and do arise from time to time, but history and experience had shown that dialogue, consultation and compromise always produced faster and acceptable results.
Earlier in an address, the Chairman Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Comrade Chukwuma Igbokwe, regretted that in less than 10 years the level of insecurity has grown so high that it has become a major threat to economic and infrastructural development in Nigeria.
The Chairman noted that the Congress has chosen the theme of this years celebration which is “Right to Work, Food and Education: A panacea to Insecurity” to show its concern about insecurity in Nigeria.
