Anambra Varsity Hospital Gets Council Accreditation
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has accredited and given approval to the Anambra University Teaching Hospital, Awka, to train 24 house officers yearly and also to train 50 medical students.
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Prof. Amobi Ilika, disclosed the approval in Awka on Monday while addressing newsmen on the achievements of the ministry.
Ilika also announced that the hospital had employed 65 specialists in various fields of medical practice, 200 pharmacists, nurses and other health personnel.
He said the hospital was in the process of bringing on board more medical officers and other health workers to provide quality medical services to the people.
The commissioner said the state government had renovated 16 of the 27 general hospitals in the state and distributed about 4 million treated mosquito nets to the people.
According to Ilika, since the inception of the present administration, the out of stock syndrome in health institutions had become a thing of the past.
He further disclosed that all the health institutions in the state had been accredited and were functional, adding that the state had become a reference point in healthcare delivery.
On the high 8.7 per cent prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the state, the commissioner attributed it to the high volume of human traffic into the state.
“The high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the state is not because our people are promiscuous, but because people are now coming out for screening and tests, as we have demystified the killer infection,” Ilika noted.
