‘Customs ’ll Surpass Revenue Target’

A stakeholder in maritime industry, Mr. Ikenna Nwuba, has reiterated that the Nigeria Customs Service would surpass its revenue target of one trillion naira this year if the federal government would consider payment of some percentage of the revenue collected to Customs agents and brokers.

Mr. Nwuba made this assertion during an interview with journalists in Port Harcourt recently.

He said once percentage of the revenue was granted to customs agents and brokers by the federal government, the issue of concealment by importers and under-declaration would be a thing of the past.

He also lamented over the activities of some unscrupulous licensed customs agents and their collaborators in the Customs to cut corners to evade duty and tariff payments.

According to him, Customs could generate over three trillion naira if the agents and brokers are brought into the picture with some percentage received from import duties paid and other sources of revenue.

Mr. Nwuba, who is also a member of the association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) in Rivers State, said the strategy if adopted would boost the revenue base of the Customs and as well eliminate bribery and corruption in the nation’s seaports.

The policy of allowing percentage payment to the agents will be beneficial in accelerating the revenue collection by Customs”, and further appealed to the federal government to consider the policy and implement it to actualise and surpass the revenue target of customs this year.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Customs Service was able to generate a total sum of N185 billion from its 30 area commands across the country for the first quarter of 2012.
