Youths Demand Oil Subsidy Probe Report Implementation
A group of Rivers State Youths under the aegis of concerned Rivers Youths has called on the Federal Government to implement the report of the House of Representatives Committee that probed the oil subsidy fund.
The group which held a peaceful protest march along major streets in Port Harcourt also called on the various bodies probing the Petroleum Subsidy fund to extend their probe to cover activities of the entire petroleum industry from inception.
Speaking to newsmen during the protest march, the Co-ordinator of the group, Hon Tam Junior Alalibo commended the Hon Farouk Lawal’s Committee that probed the subsidy fund for a job well done and urged the federal government not to sweep the recommendation of the committee under the carpet.
He called on the relevant authorities to bring to book those involved, no matter how highly placed in the society, adding that the era of sacred cows in Nigeria are over.
The Co-ordinator said such similar probe panels should be extended to investigate activities of the entire oil sector from 1956 when oil was first discovered at Oloibiri to date.
Hon Alalibo opined that the people of Niger Delta are interested in knowing how much money was generated from oil exploration in the area being used, adding that the region had suffered tremendous neglect over pollution and environmental degradation.
The former lawmaker of Akuku Toru Legislative Assembly described Niger Delta as the hen that lays the golden egg and harped that rapid development of the region is a task that must be done, and stressed that the government should take proactive action to serve as a deterrent to others for a better and egalitarian society.
Some of the placards read thus, “Petroleum Subsidy Probe 1956 to now, we appreciate the work done so far by the subsidy Probe Committee”.
