Passengers and other users of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja will soon heave a sigh of relief following the construction of a ring road and additional car park to ease traffic congestion at the airport.

Speaking in Lagos, the Regional Manager, North Central of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Chris Batukre said excavation work at the new car park was already in progress.

He stated that the construction of the ring road was also being carried out, stressing that at the end of the exercise, the current traffic congestion would be a thing of the past.

He lamented the recklessness of some drivers who pick and drop passengers indiscriminately at the airport, adding that very soon sanctions would be applied.

“We want to ensure that discipline is brought to bear on the operations at the airport, because part of the problem is impatience, indiscipline. People park their vehicles where they should not park and the big man mentality. They come to the airport with 10 cars and would not want to park at the designated area,” he said.

Mr. Bature explained that a special unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps would soon be drafted to the airport to help curtail the excesses of drivers and restore sanity.

He noted that the remodeling of airport would create opportunity for revenue generation from non-aeronautical sources due to expansion as well as create more offices for business which would in turn reduce the burden on the airlines.

The Regional General Manager also disclosed that all the power systems at the airport were being worked on for the first time, saying that much has been achieved in the last few months.

“It became imperative that for us to have maximum benefit we have to make sacrifice and we chose the window that was going to benefit everybody and within the window much has been achieved,” he said.

He expressed delight over the pace of work in Kaduna, Jos and Abuja airport terminals, adding that the good thing about the remodeling was that passengers would not regret the sacrifice they had made while the construction lasted.
